Is Macbeth Mad? -Soliloquy
Macbeth is mad in Act 2 Scene 1. It is shown when he talks to himself multiple time and hallucinates. Firstly, when Macbeth is left alone he speaks out loud to himself as if he is talking to the dagger he believes to see. "Art thou not, fatal vision, sensible/ To feeling as to sight? Or art thou but/ A dagger of the mind, a false creation,/ Proceeding from the heat-oppressed brain?" (2.1.36). The mere fact that Macbeth is questioning the existence of said dagger claims the insanity he is slipping into. Next, Macbeth starts to accept that the dagger is not actually there and he's still not completely sure what the truth is. "Mine eyes are made fools o' th' other senses,/ Or else worth all the rest." (2.1.44). This quote states that Macbeth is not confident in what he witnesses and it's making him question question his own sanity.
